This is a small family restaurant that has been the secret neighborhood eatery for more than 10 years. There are no reservations so either you put your name on the list and go have a cocktail at Prune de Nuit just near by (don’t worry, they WILL call you once the tables free up) or order a deliciously scrumptious “bobun special”, “curry des legumes” or “soup au beuf” all bustling with flavor to go eat by the canal. The service is friendly with ‘no frills’ attached…AND you get to express your artistic side by filling out the order yourself. Later you can go and see if you made the the cut on their site! Ok, it is not the most incognito of places but for the simple “quality vs price” ratio and the authentic “turn of the 19th century” atmosphere, this brasserie cannot be overlooked. At Chartier one will find strangers – tourists and locals alike – seated at the same table, refined waiters excelling in arithmetics, and simple fresh (best of all) cheap classic french dishes. What other national monument serves a salad for 2.20 euros or steak and fries for 12 euros? Try to come before 20h to avoid the wait and dont enter with a migraine, the noise can be overwhelming.

A hidden ‘no frills’ canteen where you go with fifteen of your best friends after you drink too many mojitos at Cafe Cherie next door. Everyone is a big happy family once inside, taken care of by the two brothers who run the place. The food is basic, good and best of all cheap by Paris standards. There are salads, steaks and fries, and the ever convivial couscous. No need to reserve, just maybe wait a bit.
